Siri AI Ships Behind a Waitlist and Daily Caps
Siri AI is in iOS 27 as an English beta, but a waitlist, daily caps, a future fee, and an EU iPhone freeze decide who actually gets it.
Siri AI began rolling out on September 14, 2026, as an English beta inside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27. Apple calls it an entirely new assistant with personal context, onscreen awareness, and systemwide app actions. Installing the update still does not turn it on.
On a compatible iPhone, the path is Settings, then Siri, then Try Siri AI (Beta). That step puts you on a waitlist. Wait times vary, and Apple does not publish them.
Installing iOS 27 Does Not Unlock Siri AI
Apple Support is blunt about the order of events. After the software is on the device, you pick a voice, finish voice enrollment, and review privacy settings. Then you wait. Siri AI starts downloading only when that wait ends. Until it does, the phone keeps the older assistant, and the Siri logo in Settings is supposed to show the word beta once the new one is actually running.
The language gate is just as hard as the queue. Siri AI is English only at launch. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish are due in October. German, Italian, and the rest of the Apple Intelligence language list are not on that October set. Device language and Siri language have to match, and the Apple Account has to sit in an eligible region.
People who updated on September 14 and September 15 found that gap in the first hour. The OS was there. The headline assistant was a button that joined a line. That is the product Apple shipped, not a glitch in the download.
THE GATES IN FRONT OF SIRI AI
- The waitlist: Try Siri AI (Beta) in Settings adds you to a queue with unpublished wait times.
- The language: English now; five more languages in October, with German still absent from that list.
- The region: EU iPhones, iPads, and Watches are out; mainland China is out for the new Apple Intelligence suite.
- The age line: Siri AI is not available for users under 13.
- The hardware floor: Apple Intelligence phones begin at iPhone 15 Pro, with a thinner on-device model on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro.
None of those filters is hidden. They are in the same launch note that sells the rebuild as more personal than the Siri people stopped using.
Daily Caps Come With a Paid Upgrade Path
The other footnote is about money, even though no price is attached yet. Features that rely on server-side models are already on daily usage limits. Apple names Siri AI, the Clean Up / Extend / Spatial Reframing tools in Photos, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts. Limits can change with the feature, the size of the request, and how busy the system is. Hit one, and that feature pauses until a timeout expires.
Apple’s September 14 launch note says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. The support page on usage limits, published September 9, 2026, uses the same idea: extra access to those server models will cost money. This is the second-order move inside a “free” OS update. The assistant is in the software. The heavy lifting is metered, and the open-ended version is being reserved for a paid tier Apple has not priced.
WHAT IS METERED TODAY
| Feature | Where it runs | Apple’s limit language |
|---|---|---|
| Siri AI | Phone, tablet, Mac, Watch, Vision Pro | Daily usage limits on server-side models |
| Clean Up, Extend, Spatial Reframing | Photos | Daily usage limits |
| Image Playground | Systemwide, including the Siri app | Daily usage limits |
| AFM 3 Cloud and AFM 3 Cloud Pro | Shortcuts | Daily usage limits |
| Home video summaries | Home app cameras | Tied to iCloud+ storage tier |
The Home camera cap is a different bucket. Video summaries are limited by iCloud+ plan: up to 1 camera on 2 TB, up to 2 cameras on 6 TB, and up to 5 cameras on 12 TB. That is a subscription gate that already exists. The Siri AI fee is the new one, and it still has no dollar figure.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Limits now: Server-side Apple Intelligence features are on daily caps as of the September 14, 2026 software.
- Fee later: Apple says expanded access will be sold; it has not named a plan or a price.
- Timeout: A feature that hits its cap comes back after a waiting period Apple does not quantify in public.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Waitlist length: Apple says times vary and has not posted a typical wait.
- The price: No monthly figure, and no statement that iCloud+ will cover Siri AI the way it covers Home camera counts.
On-device work still happens without that meter. Developer apps can use Apple Foundation Models on the device at no cost per request. The bill Apple is previewing is for the cloud half, which is the half that makes Siri AI look like a modern assistant rather than a voice shortcut.
European iPhones Keep the Pre-Rebuild Siri
The regional split is sharper than a delayed language pack. In the European Union, Siri AI is blocked on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and watchOS 27. A Mac or Apple Vision Pro in the same house can run it if the device is set to a supported language. A Watch cannot, because Watch Siri AI needs a paired iPhone that also has it. EU developers are locked out of testing the new Siri features in apps on those three systems.
Apple blamed the Digital Markets Act in a June 8, 2026 note and has not moved the line. The company says it still has no timeline for Siri AI on iOS or iPadOS in the bloc. The hold covers the 27 EU member states Apple lists in that note, from Austria through Sweden.
We’re deeply disappointed that our EU users won’t have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year. Our hope is to eventually bring Siri AI to the EU, and we will continue to engage with EU regulators on a path forward. However, their refusal to engage constructively on solutions that preserve privacy and security means we do not currently have a timeline for Siri AI’s availability on iOS and iPadOS in the EU.
Craig Federighi, senior vice president of Software Engineering, Apple, June 8, 2026
Apple’s technical claim is that an “extreme interpretation” of the DMA would force it to give any virtual assistant direct access to private data and the ability to control other apps as soon as Siri AI ships on iPhone. It designed an intermediary it calls Trusted System Agent and offered to launch Siri AI in the EU while phasing that framework in over 18 months. It says the European Commission rejected every proposal.
The Commission’s public rule is narrower than Apple’s warning. Article 6(7) of the DMA requires interoperability with iOS and iPadOS so third parties can use the same hardware and software features Apple keeps for itself. Thomas Regnier, a European Commission spokesperson, said the decision not to roll out Siri AI in the EU is Apple’s and Apple’s only, and that nothing in the DMA stops a new product from launching in the bloc.
WHERE APPLE AND BRUSSELS SPLIT
- Apple: Shipping Siri AI on iPhone without its Trusted System Agent would hand rival assistants unconstrained access to messages, purchases, files, and app actions.
- The Commission: The hold is a company choice. Apple asked to be excused from interoperability duties for at least 18 months, and that was not accepted.
The practical picture in a European kitchen is almost comic. The laptop can speak to the new Siri in English. The phone next to it cannot. The rest of iOS 27 still arrives, including the photo tools and the parental-control work. The assistant that Apple used to sell the cycle does not.
Which Devices Run Siri AI?
Siri AI rides on Apple Intelligence hardware, and that list starts at iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, then includes iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone Duo, and iPhone Air. iPad needs an iPad mini with A17 Pro or any iPad with M1 or later. Macs need M1 or later, plus MacBook Neo with A18 Pro. Vision Pro is in. Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and SE 3 can join when they are paired with an Apple Intelligence iPhone; some Watch features still need that iPhone nearby.
A second, thinner cut sits inside that list. Expressive voices and the more accurate on-device dictation need AFM Core Advanced, which Apple puts on iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The same class of model shows up on iPad with M4 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, Mac with M3 or later and at least 12GB, and Apple Vision Pro with M5. A 15 Pro can get the beta. It does not get that voice and dictation stack.
The Commission has already designated Apple as a gatekeeper for iOS and iPadOS, which is why the phone and the tablet are the surfaces that stalled. Mac and Vision Pro are not in that designation in the same way, and they are the surfaces that still get Siri AI in the EU. The hardware map and the legal map are now the same map.
Siri Can Read the Screen and Draft the Email
When the beta is actually on, the pitch is a single assistant that can see the display, search a person’s own mail and messages, and then do the next step in an app. Apple’s own demo is a family visit: Siri finds a relative’s suggestion in Messages, pulls a recipe from an old email, and drops the ingredients into Reminders. That is the job the old Siri never held for long.
Invocation is scattered on purpose. iPhone users can still say “Hey Siri,” press the side button, or swipe down from the Dynamic Island. iPad and Mac fold Siri AI into Spotlight and into Control-click menus on images, files, and text. Vision Pro users look at the 3D Siri object and talk. A dedicated Siri app stores the thread and syncs it over iCloud so a chat can start on the phone and continue on a Mac.
WHAT THE BETA IS BUILT TO DO
- Onscreen awareness: Ask about a sports page, then dump home games onto Calendar without leaving the site.
- Siri mode in Camera: Point at a festival poster, grab set times, and file the weekend as events. Split a bill and pay with Apple Cash in the United States, or add a pass to Wallet.
- Write with Siri: Describe a draft anywhere you type, then ask for a rewrite. In Mail and Messages it can match the punctuation and tone you already use with that person.
- Visual Intelligence on more glass: Screenshots on iPad, a keyboard shortcut on Mac, and gaze plus a question on Vision Pro.
- Third-party actions: WhatsApp and Audible work now; Outlook, Notability, and Tripsy are listed as coming soon.
Safari is in the same pass: tabs clustered by topic, Lock Screen pings for a restock or a price drop, and custom extensions built from a description. Call Context can surface a confirmation code while a business number is ringing, including on Apple Watch. Image Playground can now make photorealistic pictures, and Apple says SynthID support for spotting AI-edited images arrives in a later software update this year.
Faster Apps and the Rest of the Update
The non-assistant half of the release is easier to get, because it is not on the waitlist. Apple’s lab numbers, from tests against iOS 26.6, are the ones it wants attached to the word “snappy.”
APPLE’S OWN SPEED TESTS
- App launch: Up to 30 percent faster on iPhone, measured in August 2026 on iPhone 11 Pro Max after many usage cycles.
- New photos: Up to 70 percent faster to load after a shot, measured in July 2026 on iPhone 15 with a 50,000-asset library.
- AirDrop: Up to 80 percent faster, measured in July 2026 on iPhone 16 Plus moving 30MB of photos off Wi-Fi.
- iPad to USB: Up to 5x faster browsing and copying, measured on iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) with 10,000 JPG files onto a USB 4 SSD.
iCloud Shared Albums now send full-resolution photos and video and are easier for Android and Windows users to join. AirPods gain custom EQ, and AirPods Pro 3 can pass heart rate through GymKit while audio stays on the buds. Maps Flyover mixes aerial imagery with AI. Watch gets Smart Stack suggestions, a one-handed tap to open a widget, and Workout Buddy that no longer needs the iPhone in range, plus Spanish. Vision Pro can turn panoramas into spatial scenes and adds a Thórsmörk environment with an Icelandic aurora. Apple TV adds high-resolution lossless Apple Music and a rebuilt Podcasts app.
Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 is still dated as later this year: sound recognition that can run without the iPhone, and Live Rewind, which surfaces the previous 15 seconds of a conversation after a double press of the Digital Crown.
The Under-13 Ban and the China Hold
Two more doors stay shut even for people who beat the waitlist. Siri AI is not available for users under 13. And Siri AI plus the other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements. That is a wider freeze than the EU’s, because it takes the photo tools and Playground with it, not only the assistant.
Apple Intelligence as a platform already lists 16 languages, including German, Italian, Vietnamese, and both simplified and traditional Chinese. Siri AI does not inherit that list. It inherits English, then five languages in October. A user in the EU who wants the new Siri on a Mac still has to point that Mac at English until those five land, and German is not among them.
FROM WWDC TO THE WAITLIST
- June 8, 2026: Apple introduces Siri AI at WWDC, says EU iPhone and iPad users will not get it, and offers no date.
- September 9, 2026: Apple Support posts the usage-limits page that ties extra server-model access to a future fee.
- September 14, 2026: iOS 27 and the rest of the 27-series software ship. Siri AI opens as an English beta behind Try Siri AI (Beta).
- October 2026: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish are scheduled. No EU iPhone date is attached to that month.
The software on the phone is real, and the demos are specific enough to test. The queue, the English-only beta, the daily caps, the unpriced fee, the China hold, and the silent EU iPhone are also real. They are the terms Apple attached to the assistant on the day it finally showed up.
