The Newest Chip Is in India’s Cheapest Mac Mini
Apple’s 2 nm M6 Mac mini opens at ₹99,900 in India, but a 32GB memory cap and Thunderbolt 4 push heavy local-AI work onto M5 desktops.
Apple opened India pre-orders on August 25 for a Mac mini with its first 2 nm chip, starting at ₹99,900. Units begin arriving September 22. The same day it put a new Mac Studio on the same store, topped by an M5 Ultra that opens at ₹6,29,900.
The cheap box got the new process. The machine Apple describes as running models with hundreds of billions of parameters did not. That split, not the sub-lakh sticker, is what Indian buyers are actually configuring against.
Apple Put the New Chip in the Cheapest Box
M6 is the first Apple desktop chip built on a 2-nanometer process. In the Mac mini it uses a 12-core CPU split as two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores, plus a 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in every core and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Sri Santhanam, vice president of Apple’s Silicon Engineering Group, put the intent in one line on launch day.

Against the M4 mini, Apple’s India note claims up to 4x faster AI, 2x faster graphics and storage, and 40 percent faster CPU. In LM Studio, it claims up to 4.8x faster prompt processing than M4 and 13.5x faster than M1. Johny Srouji, Apple’s chief hardware officer, called the mini the little Mac that can do it all, from a home desk to an always-on agent box.
Both new minis and both new Studios pre-order from apple.com/in/store and the Apple Store app in 30 countries, including India. They ship with macOS 27 Golden Gate this fall, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5Gb Ethernet, with 10Gb as a paid option. The M6 mini is still the 12.7 cm cube. The new work is inside, and it stops at a hard memory wall.
32GB Is the Ceiling on the 2nm Machine
The base M6 mini ships with 16GB of unified memory and a 256GB SSD. Apple’s silicon note says the chip supports up to 32GB of unified memory at up to 170GB/s, a 10 percent bump over M5 and 2.5x over M1. That is the whole range. There is no 48GB M6 mini and no 64GB M6 mini.
Unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine, so 32GB is both working RAM and model space. A 27-billion-parameter model at 4-bit can sit there with room for context. A 70-billion-parameter model does not. Anyone running local agents, large code indexes or several VMs at once hits that cap in a single afternoon.
THE FOUR MACHINES ON THE INDIA STORE

The gap from the M6 mini to the M5 Ultra is ₹5,30,000. The first step off the new chip, onto M5 Pro in the same chassis, is already ₹1,10,000. Education pricing trims the M6 mini to ₹88,900, a saving of ₹11,000, and the Ultra to ₹5,84,900, a saving of ₹45,000. Those cuts do not raise the 32GB ceiling.
The Workstation Still Runs on M5 Silicon
M5 Ultra is Apple’s first quad-die M-series chip. UltraFusion bonds two dual-die M5 Max packages with more than 4.4TB/s of inter-die bandwidth, so the four dies act as one processor. The top build reaches a 36-core CPU (12 super cores and 24 performance cores), an 80-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, a 32-core Neural Engine, and 512GB of unified memory at 1.2TB/s. That bandwidth is 50 percent higher than M3 Ultra.
Apple’s India Studio note says this is how users run enormous language models entirely on the desk, including models with hundreds of billions of parameters. It claims up to 4.3x the peak AI compute of M3 Ultra and 9.8x that of M1 Ultra, up to 1.3x multithreaded CPU speed versus M3 Ultra, and up to 1.8x faster graphics. The Media Engine can play 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 fps. The 512GB memory build, the one that actually holds those frontier weights, is not in the first wave. Apple says it arrives in late October.
M5 Max, the cheaper Studio, uses an 18-core CPU with six super cores and 12 performance cores, an up-to-40-core GPU, and up to 128GB at 614GB/s. It is still an M5 part. So is the M5 Pro mini, which scales to an 18-core CPU, a 20-core GPU, 64GB and 307GB/s. The launch put a new number on the cheap chassis and left the high-memory stack on last season’s process, fused into a bigger package.
What a Working Mac Mini Costs in India
₹99,900 is a 16GB, 256GB machine. For video, local models or a serious Xcode library, that SSD fills up before the chip breaks a sweat. Amazon India pre-order listings recorded on September 1 already show what the next two ticks cost.
WHAT AMAZON INDIA IS ALREADY LISTING
- Base M6: 16GB and 256GB at ₹99,900, the headline SKU.
- Storage step: 16GB and 512GB at ₹1,23,900, which is ₹24,000 more.
- Memory plus storage: 24GB and 512GB at ₹1,47,900, which is ₹48,000 over the base.
- M5 Pro base: 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB and 512GB at ₹2,09,900.
The 32GB M6 build is not in those four listings, so its checkout total is still only on Apple’s configurator. The ₹24,000 rungs are the pattern. A student who actually wants 24GB and 512GB is not buying a sub-lakh desktop. They are buying a ₹1,47,900 desktop that still cannot take 64GB and still cannot join a Thunderbolt 5 cluster.
The sticker also sits on top of this year’s memory-cost reset. The M4 mini opened in India at ₹59,900. After the 2026 repricing it sat at ₹94,900. M6 is ₹5,000 above that hiked floor, and $899 in the United States, up from $599 on M4. The US M5 Pro mini is $1,699, the M5 Max Studio $2,499, and the M5 Ultra Studio $5,499. India did not get a special discount. It got the same ladder, converted and taxed, with the ₹1 lakh line used as the marketing hook.
Clustering Needs Thunderbolt 5
The M6 mini keeps three Thunderbolt 4 ports on the rear, at up to 40Gb/s. The M5 Pro mini gets three Thunderbolt 5 ports at up to 120Gb/s. Apple says Thunderbolt 5 is what lets several Mac minis pool memory and run large models on the desk. The newest chip does not get that port. The older Pro chip in the same shell does.
Mac Studio is the louder version of the same rule. Both M5 Max and M5 Ultra use Thunderbolt 5, up to six ports, and RDMA. Apple’s India Studio announcement says a cluster of four Studios delivers up to 3x faster distributed inference than one box, by sharing a memory pool across machines. EXO Labs, which spent a year on that Thunderbolt 5 RDMA stack with Apple, put the bandwidth in public on launch day: four M5 Ultra Studios aggregate to about 4.8TB/s, which is 4 times 1.2TB/s, with no extra fabric beyond cables.

That is the local-AI product Apple is actually selling to labs and studios. It starts at ₹2,09,900 for a single M5 Pro mini, and it jumps to ₹6,29,900 for one Ultra. The 2 nm M6 mini can run a 20-billion to 70-billion-parameter model for daily work, quietly, at 16 watts on a shelf. It cannot be the node in that cluster. Buyers who heard “AI desktop at ₹99,900” and thought they could stack four of them will find the port missing when the box lands.
Apple Already Grew Fast in India’s PC Market
These desktops are walking into a market that already bent toward Apple this year, and it bent on notebooks, not towers. IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker put India’s traditional PC market at 15.9 million units in 2025, up 10.2 percent, the first time the country cleared 15 million. MacBooks held about 5.6 percent of India’s notebook market that year.
Q2 2026 kept the climb going. India shipped 3.9 million PCs, up 12.1 percent. Apple posted 89.0 percent growth after the MacBook Neo landed at the end of Q1, and IDC says the company has started to show up in enterprise deals. Apple still sits inside the “Others” bucket of that quarter’s top-five table, which HP led at 29.4 percent, then Lenovo 20.3, Acer 14.8, Dell 14.1 and Asus 7.7.
INDIA PC MARKET, Q2 2026
- Total shipments: 3.9 million units, up 12.1 percent year on year.
- Commercial vs consumer: 2.2 million commercial, up 16.6 percent; 1.7 million consumer, up 6.6 percent.
- Premium and AI notebooks: notebooks above $1,000 up 78.7 percent; AI notebooks up 109.9 percent.
- Education: commercial education shipments up 24.8 percent, the cleanest match for the ₹88,900 mini.
Desktops only returned to growth at 7.7 percent. Workstations rose 11.2 percent. The M6 mini is priced like a premium notebook, not like an HP or Lenovo tower, and it is aimed at the same students, developers and small studios that already buy MacBooks. Bharath Shenoy, research manager for devices at IDC, said partners were stocking ahead of Independence Day and the festive period even as end-user demand looked softer.
Despite signs of moderating end-user demand, channel partners and e-tailers continued to build up inventory aggressively through the quarter, positioning themselves ahead of the Independence Day sales period and the upcoming festive season.

IDC also warned that the rest of 2026 could flatten, with consumers delaying as device prices rise and with channel stock still to sell through. A Mac mini that looks cheap at ₹99,900 and costs ₹1,47,900 once it is usable is walking into that exact squeeze.
September 22 Lands Ahead of Dussehra
Pre-orders have been live since August 25. That is a 28-day wait to the first customer units on September 22, and 20 days from today. The 512GB unified-memory Mac Studio follows in late October. Festive calendars that parked this launch “just before Diwali in late October” had the festival in the wrong month.
FROM PRE-ORDER TO DIWALI
- August 25, 2026: Apple opens pre-orders for the M6 mini, M5 Pro mini, M5 Max Studio and M5 Ultra Studio in India.
- September 22, 2026: First units arrive at customers, Apple Stores and authorised resellers.
- October 20, 2026: Dussehra, per the Dussehra date of October 20 on Drik Panchang, 28 days after the first shipments.
- Late October 2026: Mac Studio with 512GB unified memory begins to arrive, after the opening Studio builds.
- November 8, 2026: Diwali, with Dhanteras on November 6, forty-seven days after September 22.
So the M6 mini and the base Studios will be on Indian desks through Navratri and Dussehra. The 512GB Studio, the SKU that matches Apple’s “hundreds of billions of parameters” line, shows up in the gap between Dussehra and Diwali. Independent benches will trail the September 22 boxes by a couple of weeks. Until then the India store is selling a 2 nm chip in a 32GB chassis, and an M5 cluster machine that costs several times more, under one launch photo.
The pre-order window is still open. A 16GB, 256GB M6 mini at ₹99,900 is a fast everyday Mac. The local-AI desktop Apple described on August 25 is the other column in that table, and it does not ship at that price.
